When I replied that I tried to, he mockingly commented, “Oooh, aren’t you good!” My reply was emphatically in the negative. Of course regular church attendance doesn’t mean that we think we’re better than other people, and I tried to point out that the people in church on any Sunday morning will be there for a variety of reasons, which can often be multi-layered. However, church attendance is a natural part of the Christian faith – Jesus told his first disciples not to give up meeting together – and it is good to join with the church community to worship God, and to be spiritually fed and resourced for the coming week. What’s more, every Sunday, as part of our worship, we have the opportunity to think through our failings, bring them to God and, hopefully, to be inspired to go into the next week with a greater awareness of issues in our lives, or attitudes in our minds, which need attention. We are reminded of our call to walk the Christian path as we go about our daily business.

Just as Jesus’ 40 days in the Wilderness was, for him, a time of strengthening and preparation for the 3 year mission which was to follow, so Lent provides us with a clear opportunity to take a bit more time out of our busy lives to reassess; a change of pace. It’s good to set aside a regular slot for reading and prayer, and for a time of stillness, perhaps, where we might not just talk to God, but wait on him in silence, so that we might be able to hear when he speaks to us! Too often, in our hectic lives we tend to crowd him out.

As we came together on Ash Wednesday in our Service for the beginning of Lent, we were reminded of both our human frailty and our frail humanity, as we received, on our foreheads, the sign of the cross in ash. This was supplemented by Graham Whitcroft, in his sermon, giving us some guidelines for spending Lent productively, using 3 words or phrases beginning with the letter S to illustrate his points.

He reminded us that we live in a very materialistic world, and perhaps in Lent we might reassess our priorities and our Style of Living – perhaps Lenten fasting could be a time, not just of giving up (often grudgingly and grumpily) a particular favourite item (such as chocolate or sherry!) but of re-thinking the way we live, and simplifying it.

He also suggested that we attend to our Spiritual lives, spending more time alone with God, and learning more about him through regular reading; and thirdly, that we should aim to live our lives in Sincerity – there needs to be a wholeness about the faith we profess and the lives we live. The Old Testament prophets, and Jesus himself, urged their listeners to this wholeness of life. They pointed out that an ostentatious or superficial show of religion was empty and useless. Religious faith should be lived out in our style of living – not allowing the trappings of materialism, or other things dear to us - even such things as religious ritual - become our idols, over-important, taking a central place in our hearts and, in effect, making us prisoners of our own life-style. They urged their listeners to work for justice and mercy, and for the freedom of the oppressed – calling us to think about the structures of our own 21st Century society, as well as ways in which, as individuals, we can be more generous and compassionate to those around us. The period of Lent, then, gives us an extra push to specifically consider these matters. Those of us who are regular churchgoers, just like those on the fringe, need this extra impetus from time to time, as the demands of life can sometimes threaten to overtake us and deflect us. Lent provides an opportunity for us to spend more time looking inwards, examining our hearts, minds, and style of living, and also reminds us of our duty to reach outwards, in compassion and generosity, to those in need: a time for focussing on God; on our relationship with him; and on our relationships with each other and with the local and world-wide community.
Praying that we all have a good Lent,
Janet Roberts.

SERVICES FOR SEPTEMBER

SUNDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER
Church4all at 11.00am
Evening Communion at 6.30pm

SUNDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER
Holy Communion at 11.00am
Evensong at 6.30pm

SUNDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER
Holy Communion at 11.00am
No Evening Service

SUNDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER
Holy Communion at 11.00am
Encounter at 6.30pm

SUNDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER
Cluster Communion Service at 10.30am at St Emmanuels, Shelley
No Evening Service

Making Connections July Edition

A short while ago I was doing my turn as a Steward which allows the church to remain open to visitors, worshippers, etc. People arrive from all over the country and the world, as far away as Canada and Australia. A lot of these people come to pray and give thanks. Some to shed a few tears in memory of someone. However I find that the majority have come to discover their “roots” and to help complete their Family Tree. We had a lady from abroad who was in the area and decided to visit All Hallows. She stood quietly for a while, she was in awe of everything she saw. Then she said,
“This church is fantastic, it’s so beautiful.”
She said that churches were more awesome when they were empty. I asked if she felt filling them with Christians spoilt them, and she answered that as they filled they became more formal and austere. That made me think, are our churches in general like that, inflexible, intolerant? The thought then came to me, do the people that don’t come to our church see us this way? Also do any of the people that do come to our church see us in this way? Are we seen as an institution that’s restricted, risk averse, safe, predictable? Do we do things slowly, in a controlled, boring and uniformed way? All Hallows is a magnificent church in a relatively small village, but do people know we’re here, are we seen? It’s not the size of the church that needs to be seen, it’s the presence of the church that needs to be felt.
The thing is, that on high days and holidays people come. Days such as Mothering Sunday, Christingle, Christmas morning. But we need to ask ourselves, if that’s the only time we see some of the villagers, are we being seen as a leisure option? We as Parishioners need to go out and make a friend, be a friend, and bring that friend to church. Ask how someone is, and be prepared to listen. We need to be more accepting and non-judgemental, we need to be aware. We need to show Jesus.

                                                                                Psalm 84: vs. 1,3,4
                                                                    How lovely is your dwelling-place,
                                                                    O Lord Almighty!
Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young -
                                                                    a place near your altar
                                                                    Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
                                                                    they are ever praising you.

Making Connections June Edition

Dear Friends.
Many will be aware that it is a month in which we celebrate and remember the that Queen Elizabeth ll became Queen of England, Great Britain and the Empire, as it was then. She waited another year until June 2nd 1953 until she was actually crowned. Of course the big news of that day was really the news that Everest had been climbed for the first time by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, though a couple of days earlier on May 29th.

It struck me that there must be some connection between these two events. One was the recognition of a new sovereign, and all that that means, and the other was a supreme feat of courage and daring, skill and above all else, team work. There is no doubt that in those days, no one could have climbed to the top Everest on their own. In our very own church here in Kirkburton we are to celebrate the queen's jubilee with a exhibition of her wedding dress and other wonderful outfits. We hope that as many people as possible will be able to come and visit and see these remarkable garments.

But also in our church we celebrate another sovereign, another who claims our allegiance, and he is Jesus, the one who came from above, from the presence of God himself, into our troubled world to bring us hope and peace and the knowledge that God loves us. This is the same God that calls us all to know that he wants us all, whoever we are, to be part of a team, part of a family, part of a nation, all under one God and all committed to the same purpose, that of loving God and serving the people of this world. This God that some of us recognise in Jesus of Nazareth, calls us all to live as, and be part of, his family here on earth. He knows that we need his help, and love, but also that we so often find that love and help in one another.

The psalmist says in psalm 24:verse 3, “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?” That is, who is able to come into God’s presence? The Sherpas who live and work below Everest, call the mountain, Chomolungma. It means 'Goddess, mother of the world'. Jesus spoke, as many of us know, of God as 'Father'. This God, who we recognise in Jesus, invites us all to, ascend the hill of the Lord, “to stand in his holy place” Come and join us to look on these wonderful memorabilia of our Queen. But come and join us in worship sometime, and enter into God’s presence in this wonderful building. Perhaps it is possible to serve two sovereigns. One here on earth and the other in heaven. The church celebrates and rejoices in both of them, but also looks forward to others becoming members of our team, our family.
God bless you in this time of Jubilee.

Geoff Clay.

WEDDING DRESS EXHIBITION

<dc:subject>HOME PAGE<span class="desc">Start your journey</span></dc:subject>

All Hallows Church Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
1st June to 5th June

Remembering the reason for these celebrations – that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for 60 years – we are proud to present magnificent replicas of the ceremonial gowns, worn at the Coronation and at her Wedding, for your enjoyment.

It will be interesting to compare these with replicas of two other royal wedding dresses – those of Princess Charlotte (early 19thC) and Maria de Medici (late 16thC).

These amazing creations have been in the making since September 2011 by students of three universities as part of their final year’s projects.

Our local University of Huddersfield, (M.A. Textiles) student Jaki Bogg has contributed mainly in the embroidered lace decoration of the Queen’s Wedding Dress fabric, whilst Dorte Kimer (B.A.Costume with Performance Design - Arts University at Bournemouth) constructed the dress.

On the same course at Bournemouth, Heather Coad was responsible for the construction of the Coronation Robe and has been engaged in all aspects of cutting and fitting along with much embroidery and beadwork. She has been supported by many students but Helen Hodges and Rebecca Bernard (Embroidery) merit a special mention.

Thirdly, one student from The University of Glamorgan, (B.A. Hons Costume Construction for Screen & Stage) Callan Matthews has been working on the two royal gowns from way back in history.

It is expected that two or three of these very talented students will be able to travel to Kirkburton to be with us, to see their work on display and to answer any questions you may have when you see what they have produced. We just know you’ll be full of admiration and have lots of things to ask them!

All around the church there will be a wonderful display of wedding dresses, loaned to us by ‘brides’ of the parish; there are styles from every decade of the Queen’s reign and dresses from four generations of the same family.

We at All Hallows request the pleasure of your company..............
at our very special exhibition – Friday 1st to Tuesday 5th June 2012, 10am – 4pm - come and enjoy a cup of tea and piece of homemade wedding cake and our souvenir programme will ensure the day will be long remembered.

CALENDAR RAISES FUNDS

Shirley Waddington of Kirkburton used her talents to create a calendar for the community, and has kindly donated the profits from the sales to the Heating Fund.
